What the operation is
Geita combines open-pit and underground mining with a large processing plant on the southern shore of Lake Victoria. It has produced gold continuously since 2000 and is repeatedly cited by government as the benchmark for what a compliant, tax-paying large-scale operation looks like in Tanzania.
The mine's economics turn on grade and on power reliability; self-supply and grid interruptions are a recurring cost item disclosed by the operator.
Fiscal terms and the 2017 reforms
Tanzania's 2017 Natural Wealth and Resources legislation and the 2018 royalty and clearing-fee changes rewrote the terms under which large mines operate: higher gold royalty, a one per cent clearing fee, mandatory local content, and a state free-carried interest in new projects. Geita's disclosures are the clearest public window into how those terms land on an operating mine.
Community and land record
Resettlement around the licence area, artisanal incursion onto pit ground, and water quality in surrounding villages are the standing local issues. Grievance mechanisms exist on paper; independent verification of their use is limited.
