Rather than a single company, this is a group of plants and associations around Tiira and Amonikakinei that mill, concentrate and amalgamate gold ore. Together they handle a meaningful share of Busia's declared output, much of it originating from artisanal pits.

Amalgamation with mercury remains common in this cluster despite Uganda's commitments under the Minamata Convention. Retorts and sealed circuits exist at some plants but are far from universal, and exposure among plant workers and nearby households is poorly measured.

The cluster is a patchwork of medium-scale licences, artisanal location licences and registered associations, several of which share the same milling infrastructure. That structure makes compliance hard to attribute: a single plant may treat ore from titles held by three different parties, only one of which files returns.

Reform of the cluster depends on plant-level record keeping — logged ore receipts, declared recoveries and named suppliers — which the Directorate has signalled it wants but has not yet enforced consistently.

Tiira and Amonikakinei are working settlements, not fenced concessions. Households live metres from crushers and sluices, water is shared with processing circuits, and children are present around plants during school holidays.

Because the plants buy from local diggers, they are also the main source of cash in the area, which suppresses complaints and makes independent monitoring of safety and mercury use unusually important.
